During my time as the Marketing & Event Specialist at the Gaylord Area Chamber of Commerce, which is housed in the same building as the Gaylord Area Tourism Bureau, one of the most frequently asked questions I heard from visitors was, "Where can we view the elk?" With good reason – elk viewing is a standout attraction in Gaylord.
For those who are experienced with off-roading and reading maps without cellular signals, the Pigeon River State Forest is the place to be to see wild elk. Located just a short drive from downtown Gaylord, the Pigeon is home to Michigan’s largest free-roaming elk herd. If you’re planning a visit, I recommend stopping by the Gaylord Information Center first. They can provide you with maps, tips, and the latest information on elk activity to help you make the most of your trip.
However, for those who prefer a more accessible option, the City of Gaylord offers an enclosed viewing, Patrick Mankowski Elk Park. This is a great choice for families, seniors, or anyone who wants to see these magnificent creatures without venturing into the wilderness. The Elk Viewing Park provides a convenient and safe way to observe elk up close, making it a perfect stop for all visitors.
In addition to elk, the Patrick Mankowski Elk Park is also home to Sitka and Fallow deer. These smaller, yet awe-striking animals share the enclosure with the elk, providing visitors with an opportunity to observe a diverse range of wildlife in one location.
Bringing a pair of binoculars or a good camera with a zoom lens can enhance your experience. You may also catch an image with your phone if you angle it through the fence. Just be careful not to lose your phone; the elk are in a fenced enclosure, and guests aren't welcome past the fence.
Elk viewing in Gaylord is more than just a chance to see wildlife; it’s an opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the serene beauty of Northern Michigan. Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor, this experience is sure to leave a lasting impression.
